Karuna Reiki® — the path of compassion
Karuna Reiki® is a form of Reiki that emerged in the early 1990s. Its name comes from Sanskrit: karuna — any action taken to relieve the suffering of others.
Where Usui Reiki opens awareness, Karuna Reiki® is its natural extension: an energy of elevation that helps us move through what we carry without always knowing it — fear, guilt, a sense of powerlessness — not by suppressing these states, but by accompanying them with compassion rather than resistance.
The two energies are fully compatible. A practitioner initiated in Karuna can combine them freely during a session, according to what they perceive. No prior knowledge is needed to receive a treatment: you simply need to be present and open to it.
A Karuna Reiki® session is often experienced as a process that is both gentle and deep. What was frozen can start moving again. What was heavy can become lighter.
An energetic lineage, not just a practice
Access to Karuna Reiki® requires mastery of Usui Reiki: only a person initiated into the Usui Third Degree — holder of the Master symbol — can enter this system. This is not an administrative rule: it is a necessity dictated by the energy itself.
The Usui Master symbol acts as an inner key that heightens what lies at the heart of Reiki: a spiritually guided energy, an infinite intelligence that knows where to go. Without this foundation, a person would receive Karuna energy — but not Karuna Reiki®: it is the union of the two that forms a living system, able to perceive exactly what the person needs and to adjust its vibration accordingly.
The system is taught in two levels: Practitioner and Master. A gap of about a year between Usui Mastery and Karuna Mastery is recommended, so that integration is solid before going further.
William Rand, founder of the system, registered it as a trademark — its protocols, its manual, its name — while stating that neither the energy nor the symbols belong to him. A registration system guarantees identical teaching all over the world. A teacher who departs from it remains free to do so, but can no longer call their system Karuna Reiki®.
